The Effect

One of your exam questions concerns the play, The Effect.  Review your ethical theories theories here if need be, in order to debate the rightness/wrongness of the experiment.  Is The Effect too much risk for a human?  What would Hellman & Hellman and Marquis say about the experiment, especially the obligation to the research subjects as opposed to an obligation to the study.

Do you think that it would be wrong to use something like what's being researched in The Effect to fall in love?  Under what circumstances would it be right or wrong?

  1. I believe that The Effect is not too great of a risk for humans. The subjects voluntarily agreed to do the study and accept the risks. The obligation of the doctor should have been to the study over the subjects. She should not have told either of the subjects who had the placebo and who had the real drug.

I do believe that it is alright to use this drug so long as each of the people falling in love knows that the drug is being used. They are both giving their consent to the action taking place. So long as the full truth is revealed to all parties, the action should be ethically right. However, if one subject knows about the drug and the other does not, the act is wrong. As Kant would say, you should not lie or hide the truth from others.
