  1. About computer diagnosing, I think the idea of using a computer to supplement the diagnostic procedure is a valuable advancement for the medical field. It would not replace the role of the doctor but would encourage and make aware to the doctor the possibility of other less common or missed diagnoses. This serves to provide better and more specific care to the patient. The only risk I can see associated with this is if the computers ability to diagnose replaces the doctors. Computers are capable to tangible, fact driven processes, but do not provide the intuition and evaluation skills of a competent physician.

  2. The Decade of Misconduct article discussed a senior cardiovascular disease and diabetes researcher, Eric Smart, from the University of Kentucky who has been found guilty of falsifying data over the past 10 years. He has falsified this data on grant applications, published papers, and progress reports; even making up experiments with "mice" that never existed to back up his false findings. He collected over 8 Million in grants from national institutions. Smart is now working as a chemistry teacher in a Lexington school. Overall, what Smart did was morally wrong and destructive to many researchers projects who used Smart's work as a resource. Being in the medical and scientific field, high officials must look into all the research being done and published in order to make certain that grant money and research is correctly shown.

  3. I was not at all surprised when I read the article of the Decade of Misconduct. This is not the first time I have seen this happen. This past semester in my Developmental Biology class we read scientific journal articles. One of them we read had been retracted because of fabricated information just like Dr. Smart had done. It is however, kind of shocking that these data are able to pass all the reviews for publication. I wonder how the data is eventually found to be false. Maybe through more research on the topic and trials to duplicate the experiment? But I think there does need to be punishment like there was for Dr. Smart, so that other scientists know there are consequences for this act.
